General Scholarship Fund

On Nov. 5, 2009, Virginia Commonwealth University announced Opportunity VCU, an initiative to raise $50 million for student scholarships and fellowships across all academic units. As the cost of dental education continues to rise, and the amount of support VCU receives from the Commonwealth for the school has continued to decline, providing student scholarship funds is vital.

Dean David Sarrett has made private gift support and the equitable and fair distribution of student scholarships a priority. The General Scholarship Fund is a new fund and the first of its kind for the school.

The amount of each scholarship and the number of scholarships distributed will be a direct result of contributions within each fiscal year. The scholarship/awards committee of the school determines the eligibility of applying students and ensures distribution of the awards. Award criteria may be revised on a yearly basis.

Criteria

  • Open to all dental and dental hygiene students
  • Preference given to students who are not receiving and/or not eligible for any major scholarships/grants/awards
  • Students who are experiencing critical/severe financial need also may be given preference
