Alexander Kaufman Award for Dentistry
Dr. Alexander Kaufman was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 18, 1912. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1930. He continued his education at the MCV School of Dentistry, graduating in 1934. He met and married his wife, Alexandra David, while studying at MCV.
When World War II broke out, Kaufman served with the U.S. Army Dental Corps. After the war, he joined the Army Reserves and served for 30 years, retiring with the rank of colonel. At the same time, he set up his dental practice in Richmond, Va., where he remained for the next 26 years. He and his wife raised four daughters, all of whom, coincidentally, married VCU School of Dentistry graduates.
Kaufman later relocated to Fla., where he set up a new practice with one of his sons-in-law and worked for 20 more years. He practiced dentistry for a total of 46 years.
In 1992, four years before his death at the age of 84, Kaufman's daughters and their husbands created this scholarship to honor his dedication to excellence in dentistry and to applaud a conscientious, hard-working and gifted dentist.
