Dr. Herbert Robert and Lottie Schwartz Kolb Memorial Scholarship in Dentistry

Dr. Herbert Robert and Lottie Schwartz Kolb Memorial Scholarship in Dentistry

Dr. Millie (Kolb) Tannen established this scholarship in 2013 in loving memory of her parents, Dr. Herbert Robert and Lottie Schwartz Kolb. Kolb was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1921. He earned his bachelor's degree from Long Island University in 1941 and graduated from Temple University School of Dentistry in 1945. He served as a captain in the United States Army and was employed by the Veterans’ Administration for 35 years, first as a general dentist and then later as a prosthodontist following his postgraduate training in 1962. Kolb served as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Prosthodontics at Virginia Commonwealth University for 29 years.

He was happily married for 64 years to Lottie Schwartz, who was born in Monticello, N.Y. in 1923 and, after graduating two years early from high school, became a legal secretary in Manhattan. They were devoted parents to Tannen and her sister, Claudia K. Zaritsky, and loving grandparents to their four grandchildren.

This scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior dental student who has demonstrated excellence in prosthodontics. Tannen hopes this financial gift will benefit qualifying dental students by supplementing their educational expenses.
